Description of the Map. This map shows the disposition of troops on this second day of the battle. The designation “5 p.m.” appears slightly to the left of the title. As the fighting began late in the day and continued on well into the evening, this could be interpreted as a depiction of forces going into the second day of the battle. Color coding indicates the location of Union and Confederate forces. Relief shown by hachures. Scale: 1:38990
About the Mapmaker and his Work. Robert Knox SNEDEN [1832-1918] was born in Nova Scotia. At age 18 he moved to New York City. On 1861, Sneden was enlisted in the 40th New York Volunteers Regiment to serve in the US Civil War, and a few months later he got a position as mapmaker, until he was captured. While in prison he made dramatic pencil sketches, hiding them in his shoes or sewed them in his coat and hat. This talented artist crafted some 900 watercolors and sketches. Sneden was able to turn his pencil sketches into watercolors after he was freed on 1864.
We are delighted to offer a great collection of his most important US Civil War maps.
