Description of the Artwork/Battle.
After capturing Fort Henry on February 6, 1862, Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant advanced cross-country to invest Fort Donelson. On February 16, 1862, the fort’s 12,000-man garrison surrendered unconditionally. This was a major victory for Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and a catastrophe for the South. Grant received a promotion to major general for his victory and attained stature in the Western Theater, earning the nom de guerre “Unconditional Surrender”. Result: Union victory.

Artist and/or Printmaker.
Founded in 1885, Kurz & Allison is well known for its production of commemorative prints of American historical scenes using the chromolithograph printing process. Drawn in a broad, graphic style that developed from Kurz’s background as a muralist, these prints have a striking appearance that makes them not only interesting historical images but also excellent decorative prints. The Kurz and Allison works of art are highly stylized with bright, dramatic colors.
